Student Complaints & Appeals
A fair process for resolving concerns.
LSB is committed to providing a high-quality educational experience. However, we recognize that sometimes things can go wrong. We take all complaints and appeals seriously and aim to resolve them fairly, transparently, and quickly.
1. Academic Appeals
An academic appeal is a request for a review of a decision made by an Assessment Board. Students may appeal on specific grounds, such as:
- Procedural irregularity in the assessment process.
- Bias or prejudice on the part of an examiner.
- Extenuating circumstances that were not known at the time of the Assessment Board (for valid reasons).
Note: Disagreement with academic judgement (i.e., thinking you deserved a higher mark) is not a valid ground for appeal.
2. Student Complaints Procedure
Complaints relate to the quality of service or facilities provided by the School. The procedure has three stages:
- Stage 1: Informal Resolution. We encourage students to raise issues directly with the relevant staff member or department first. Most issues can be resolved quickly at this stage.
- Stage 2: Formal Complaint. If the issue is not resolved informally, students can submit a Formal Complaint Form to the Student Services team within 3 months of the incident. An investigation will be conducted.
- Stage 3: Review. If the student is dissatisfied with the outcome of Stage 2, they may request a review by a senior member of staff not previously involved in the case.
3. Office of the Independent Adjudicator (OIA)
LSB is a member of the OIA Scheme. If a student has exhausted our internal complaints or appeals procedures and remains dissatisfied, they may be eligible to take their case to the Office of the Independent Adjudicator for Higher Education (OIAHE). This is an independent body that reviews student complaints.
