Assessment & Examinations
Ensuring academic standards and fair grading.
Assessment is central to the learning experience at LSB. Our policy ensures that assessment is valid, reliable, and transparent, providing students with the opportunity to demonstrate their achievement of learning outcomes.
1. Grading Scale
We utilize the standard UK Higher Education grading classification:
| Classification | Mark Range | Descriptor |
|---|---|---|
| First Class (1st) | 70% + | Excellent / Outstanding |
| Upper Second (2:1) | 60% - 69% | Very Good |
| Lower Second (2:2) | 50% - 59% | Good / Satisfactory |
| Third Class (3rd) | 40% - 49% | Pass |
| Fail | 0% - 39% | Insufficient |
2. Feedback Policy
Constructive feedback is vital for student development. LSB is committed to providing feedback on all coursework within 15 working days of the submission deadline. Feedback will be clearly linked to the assessment criteria and learning outcomes.
3. External Examining
To ensure our standards are comparable with other UK universities, all assessed work is subject to review by External Examiners. These are senior academics from other institutions who verify the fairness and consistency of our marking.
4. Mitigating Circumstances
We understand that unforeseen events can impact performance. Students facing serious illness or personal issues may apply for Mitigating Circumstances. Applications must be supported by independent evidence (e.g., medical notes) and submitted within 5 days of the assessment deadline.
