Academic Integrity

Academic integrity is the foundation of our community. LSB expects all students to act with honesty and integrity in their academic work. Academic misconduct undermines the value of our degrees and is taken extremely seriously.

1. Definitions of Misconduct

Academic misconduct includes, but is not limited to:

• Plagiarism: Presenting another person's work or ideas as your own without proper acknowledgement.
• Collusion: Working with others on an assignment that is meant to be individual work.
• Contract Cheating: Paying a third party to complete an assignment on your behalf.
• Fabrication: Falsifying data or results.

2. Detection and Turnitin

LSB uses Turnitin, a text-matching software, to assist in the detection of plagiarism. All coursework submissions are automatically checked against a global database of academic work and internet sources. Students are encouraged to use the draft submission tool to check their own work before the final deadline.

3. Penalties

If academic misconduct is proven, penalties will be applied based on the severity of the offense and the level of study. Penalties range from a formal warning and a mark of zero for the component, to expulsion from the School in the most serious cases (e.g., contract cheating).

4. Good Academic Practice

We are committed to teaching students how to avoid misconduct. All new students must complete the "Academic Integrity Module" during induction. The Library and Learning Development team offers workshops on referencing, critical writing, and time management throughout the year.
